Ivan Terranova

(Catania, 1990)
From the age of 4 he devoted himself to the study of the piano, from classical music to the most modern languages, up to the study of jazz music and the activity of concert player. After graduation, he moved to Catania, where he attended the CESM master classes in jazz piano. At the same time, given the strong creative impulse and the interest matured over the years in the visual arts and photography, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he obtained a first level degree in "Technological Arts", discussing a thesis on synaesthetic links between musicians and painters in contemporary arts. He graduated in the two-year photography period of the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania with an experimental thesis. He currently collaborates as an author, curator and teacher with public and private institutions. The experiential relationship with a conceptual landscape is central to his projects, as well as issues related to the concept of territoriality and boundary, using different languages ??such as photography, video, performance and installation. His projects have been exhibited in exhibitions and collections on national and international territory.

“For some time, in fact for years, I have been playing with the idea of articulating the space of life - bios - in a map."
(Walter Benjamin)

project description

Quando sorgono le Pleiadi

Since the dawn of our civilization, there has been a strong symbolic and symbiotic connection between matter and religious and spiritual beliefs, which represents a fundamental element of humanity. The stone has become a symbol of eternity and context for rituals in which men have embarked on a path of connection and understanding of the world and the unknown. "When the Pleiades arise" is a combination of installation, land art and photography, but first of all a rediscovery of ancient rituals, in which I wanted to bring the luminaire as a gift in an ancestral landscape. A series of images born from a need for solitude, meditation, and silence. The suggestion of the image suggests the presence of mysterious dazzling entities, which give life to the megaliths, wrapped in darkness. A world suspended between reality and fiction, between ritual and devotion, between document and poetry, which I wrote and added in a conceptual landscape and immerse myself in an ultra-earthly rhythm, making this series a dreamlike ascent to artistic rituality.

This is the concept

"Quando sorgono le Pleiadi is a photographic series made throughout the year 2018. It arises from the personal need to seek a dimension of silence, meditation and spirituality. Photography becomes the final part of a more complex ritual, in which artificial lights are inserted in a natural landscape without light pollution. An ancestral territory, characterized by the presence of megalithic rocks, used in past eras as an astronomical observatory but also as a border place between earthly life and beyond. In the luminous balls that give life to a crepuscular installation, as in ritual practice, we discover not so much a foreign body but the compassion of light that helps us reflect on our deep darkness. A night that with the irreverent modernity has become more dense and gloomy, and has deprived the human being of that sacred and mythological time which was not an escape in itself, but the gateway to a more open world."
